Wyatt "Dusty" Chandler es un cantante de música country de fama internacional. Sin embargo, siente que su elaborada puesta en escena ha acabado por ensombrecer su música, una sospecha que se confirma cuando durante un concierto olvida varias líneas de uno de sus mayores éxitos y sus fans no se dan cuenta. En busca de un cambio de aires, decide marcharse después del concierto sin decírselo a su manager, Lula. Solo se lo cuenta a su mejor amigo y batería del grupo, Earl, aunque éste no sabe ni a dónde va ni cuánto tiempo va a estar fuera. Así, Dusty se afeita, se corta su larga cabellera, y se marcha a la pequeña granja en la que se crió, donde vive su abuela. Finalmente termina en el rancho de la familia Tucker, donde nadie le conoce. Allí se ganará el respeto del dueño, Ernest, y se enamorará de su encantadora nieta, Harley. Cuando Dusty se entera de que su manager lo ha reemplazado en secreto por su novio Buddy, decide volver a los escenarios.
